When international couples think about getting married in Italy, their minds go immediately to Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast. And those are beautiful choices. But there is a region that, for those who know it, offers something truly unique a variety of landscapes, venues and atmospheres that no other part of Italy can match. That region is Lombardy.
The lakes: Como, Maggiore and Garda
Lake Como is perhaps the most iconic. The deep blue water, the mountains reflected on the surface, the historic villas with their terraced gardens — there is nowhere else in the world that looks quite like this. Couples from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and all over Europe choose Lake Como for their wedding every year, and it is easy to understand why.
But Lombardy has more than one lake. Lake Maggiore, with the Borromean Islands floating in the middle of the water, is equally breathtaking. Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, offers a slightly warmer, more Mediterranean atmosphere. Each lake has its own personality, its own light, its own way of making a wedding day feel extraordinary.
The countryside: Brianza, Franciacorta and the Po Valley
Away from the lakes, Lombardy offers a different kind of beauty — gentler, more intimate. The Brianza hills north of Milan, the vineyards of Franciacorta, the ancient farmhouses of the Po Valley with their long avenues of trees and their silence. These are places where time seems to slow down, where a wedding feels like it belongs to another era.
A country estate in the Lombardy countryside, with a white dress on an unpaved road beneath weeping willows, sunflowers in the bouquet, the air still warm in summer this is a wedding that tells a story.
Milan: the city that has everything
For couples who want the energy of a city, Milan offers something that no other Italian city can match a unique combination of historical elegance and contemporary style. Neoclassical courtyards, modern architecture, rooftop terraces with views of the Duomo. Milan is a city that knows how to dress up for a celebration.
The light of Lombardy
As a photographer, there is one thing I love most about Lombardy the light. In summer, the golden hour lasts longer here than almost anywhere else. The light from the lakes, reflected and diffused by the water, creates a softness that makes every photograph look like a painting. In autumn, the warm tones of the foliage against the grey of the mountains produce images of extraordinary depth.
The candlelight at Villa Carminati Resta on Lake Como, reflecting off the Venetian terrazzo floors. The warm glow of a long imperial table at night, flowers and crystal glasses dissolving into bokeh. These are images that Lombardy gives you if you know how to look for them.
Italian traditions that make a wedding unforgettable
One of the most beautiful things about photographing weddings in Lombardy is the Italian tradition that surrounds every celebration. The flower crowns worn by the bridesmaids, the long lunches that become dinners, the dancing that goes on until the early hours, the grandmothers who cry and laugh at the same time. These are moments that you cannot plan you can only be ready to capture them.
Getting married in Lombardy: practical information
Lombardy is exceptionally well connected. Milan has two international airports Malpensa and Linate with direct flights from most major cities in Europe, the United States and beyond. From Milan, the lakes are reachable in under an hour by car or train.
The best seasons for a Lombardy wedding are late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and October) the light is at its best, the temperatures are comfortable and the crowds are smaller than in high summer.
Working with a local photographer
Choosing a photographer who knows Lombardy is not just a practical advantage it changes the quality of your photographs. Knowing where the light falls at different times of day, knowing which corner of a villa garden turns golden at sunset, knowing the logistics of moving between ceremony and reception — this knowledge is built over years of working in the same landscapes.
I have been photographing weddings in Lombardy for over fifteen years. From Lake Como to the Brianza countryside, from Milan city centre to the ancient farmhouses of the Po Valley. If you are planning your wedding in this region and you want photographs that truly capture its beauty, I would love to hear from you.
